Trade and professional associations are one of KTD Creative’s deepest areas of work. Over the years, KTD has partnered with more than a dozen—including the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine; the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO); the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA); the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA); the Community Transportation Association of America (CTAA); the Maryland Distillers Guild (MDG); and CropLife International, based in Brussels, Belgium.
Associations come with their own particular demands—diverse memberships, mission-driven messaging, and the need for a brand voice that stays consistent across events, advocacy, and communications—and KTD has learned to navigate all of them. This case study looks at one of those partnerships in depth.
The Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA) is a national trade association representing the companies, organizations, and leaders that make up the sports and fitness industry. Founded in 1906, SFIA has evolved from its origins as the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association into a broad-based organization serving more than 700 sporting goods and fitness brands, manufacturers, retailers, governing bodies, and sports leagues. The organization is headquartered in Silver Spring, MD.
SFIA’s mission is twofold: to promote sports and fitness participation and to support the vitality of the industry itself. Its work spans thought leadership, advocacy, research, and member services, giving the organization a wide-ranging role within the sports and fitness community — and a steady stream of events, campaigns, and communications that all need to speak with one clear, consistent brand voice.
SFIA needed more than a vendor it could hand a project to. It needed a creative partner it could work alongside — one that would come to know the organization well enough to move quickly, anticipate what each project required, and keep everything on brand across a wide range of audiences and formats.
The work was never a single assignment. Over the course of several years, SFIA’s needs spanned flagship executive conferences, specialized professional summits, Capitol Hill advocacy, and the organization’s own headquarters. Each project carried its own audience, objectives, and messaging, and many arrived on tight, deadline-driven timelines. What tied them together was the need for a partner close enough to the organization to translate shifting priorities into polished, cohesive work — again and again, without starting from zero each time.
KTD Creative became a true extension of the SFIA team. The relationship was built on close, ongoing collaboration — working side by side with SFIA across multiple years and multiple projects, learning the organization’s brand, audiences, voice, and priorities so deeply that each new project could build on the last rather than begin from scratch.
That collaboration is what made everything else possible. Because KTD understood SFIA from the inside, it could give each event and initiative its own distinct identity and energy while keeping every piece unmistakably connected to the organization behind it. And because the working relationship was so close, KTD could turn work around fast when timelines were tight — which they often were.
Across these initiatives, KTD delivered a wide and varied body of work, including:
Working this closely with SFIA meant KTD could own each project end to end — from the first creative concept through design, production, and on-site delivery — all while keeping every piece consistent with the SFIA brand. It’s the kind of ownership that only comes from a genuine partnership, and it’s what allowed the fast turnarounds to happen without a drop in quality.
Over multiple years and multiple projects, KTD Creative helped SFIA turn its events — and its own workspace — into cohesive branded experiences, giving the organization creative support that could flex with different audiences, objectives, and formats while remaining unmistakably SFIA.
The clearest measure of the work is the relationship itself. SFIA came back to KTD year after year and across initiative after initiative — the Industry Leaders Summit, the Litigation, Regulatory & Risk Management Summit and its successor the Business & Risk Management Summit, National Health Through Fitness Day, and the branding of SFIA’s own headquarters — trusting the same partner with everything from its highest-profile executive gatherings to its advocacy presence on Capitol Hill to the walls of its offices.
That kind of sustained, collaborative partnership is what KTD does best. Rather than treating each project as a one-off, KTD invested in understanding SFIA over time — its brand, its audiences, its voice, and its goals — and brought that accumulated knowledge to every new project. The result was work that was faster to produce, more consistent across formats, and more deeply connected to the organization it represented, because it came from a partner who truly knew the client.
“Working with KTD has proved to be a fantastic decision! Kate and her team are very professional, easy-going, and receptive. We hired KTD Creative for 3 of our company’s annual events — very different in clientele and scope, from a lobby day, to legal representatives, to executives — and they have been amazing through each one, with inventive concepts for each. They really listened to what we were looking for and have been timely with all deliveries. It has been a pleasure working with Kate and team — they make it easy and their final product is always first class. Would highly recommend KTD Creative!
