KTD Creative partnered with Community Law Center, a Baltimore-based nonprofit legal organization with a remarkable history of using the law to strengthen neighborhoods and empower community organizations. Founded in 1986 by a group of lawyers and community organizers, Community Law Center was created around a simple but powerful idea: residents and grassroots organizations should have access to legal expertise when advocating for their communities. Over four decades, the organization has become Maryland’s only legal services organization dedicated exclusively to strengthening neighborhoods and small nonprofits.
From its earliest work addressing vacant and abandoned properties, nuisance conditions, illegal dumping, and other threats to neighborhood stability, Community Law Center has consistently approached the law as a tool for community change. Its work has helped neighborhood organizations challenge blight, protect residents, pursue equitable development, strengthen nonprofits, and advocate for policy reforms. Today, the majority of its cases remain focused in Baltimore City, particularly in historically disinvested Black neighborhoods where resident leaders are working to address the effects of long-standing racial inequity and disinvestment.
KTD Creative began the engagement by designing a new logo and visual identity for the organization, establishing a stronger and more contemporary foundation for its communications. We then carried that identity into the design and development of a new, impactful WordPress website that would better communicate Community Law Center’s mission, services, accomplishments, and community-centered approach.
This was a highly collaborative engagement. KTD Creative worked closely with Community Law Center’s senior leadership throughout the project, particularly its executive director, to understand the organization’s history, its unique role within Baltimore’s nonprofit and legal-services communities, and the many audiences the website needed to serve. Rather than simply creating a visually appealing website, we worked with leadership to determine how the organization’s story should be presented, how complex information could be made accessible, and how the site could better connect community organizations and nonprofit leaders with the legal resources they need.
That close collaboration was especially important because Community Law Center is not simply a traditional legal-services provider. The organization describes itself as a legal partner to neighborhoods and nonprofits, working alongside community leaders rather than simply providing a transactional service. Its staff and network of pro bono attorneys provide everything from nonprofit formation and governance assistance to real estate, nuisance-abatement, advocacy, and long-term litigation support.
The website reflects that philosophy. KTD Creative created an approachable, user-friendly experience that balances the authority of a respected legal organization with the energy, humanity, and determination of the communities it serves. High-quality photography brings the organization’s work to life, while a dynamic homepage carousel immediately draws visitors into its stories, programs, resources, and impact.
The project also represents KTD Creative’s ability to work with established nonprofits whose histories and missions require thoughtful storytelling. Community Law Center has played a significant role in Baltimore’s community-development landscape since 1986, including pioneering work around vacant properties, nuisance abatement, community organizing, and equitable development. Its founder and longtime executive director, Anne Blumenberg, helped establish a model of community lawyering that became nationally recognized.
By combining strategic branding, thoughtful information architecture, compelling visual design, and close collaboration with senior leadership, KTD Creative created a digital presence worthy of Community Law Center’s history and its ongoing work. The result is a website designed not simply to inform visitors, but to help the organization continue connecting Maryland communities with the legal knowledge, advocacy, and partnerships they need to create meaningful change.
